Arrison discusses the many facets of increasing...

<script Arrison discusses the many facets of increasing life expectancies including environmental impacts, market dynamics, and population change. She considers the very real near-future possibility of individuals living comfortably until 150 years of age, and the greater notion of immortality.

I consider myself a futurist, so this kind of thing really gets me excited. One idea that I had not considered that Arrison brings up is the notion of increasing human capital as population increases. In science fiction and real life predictions for population growth, we often hear and discuss all the ways we’ll ruin the planet and fold in upon ourselves if we begin to live so long. But Arrison discusses the possibility that with more people, we can more easily deal with the problems that come along with an increasing and aging population (in a way the issue could solve itself).

The only criticism I can field against that idea is that is assumes all 20 billion of us (or whatever number we reach) will have equally weighted access to the knowledge that can start solving problems. Currently, a large portion of the world’s population is simply struggling to survive. If that portion of the population increases at a faster rate than those portions that can focus on the broader issues, Arrison’s prediction may not occur as planned.

In any case, it’s an interesting idea worth mulling over, and even with the minor caveat I mentioned above, I find everything in this interview to be fantastic.

Watch this slinky defy gravity.

Watch this slinky defy gravity.

A Haunting Photograph of the Fall Equinox from Space

A Haunting Photograph of the Fall Equinox from Space:
Enjoy this photo from NASA and a video time lapse of the seasons from a geostationary satellite.

EU Adds 20 Years to Music Copyrights

EU Adds 20 Years to Music Copyrights:
The iron grip on creative material continues.

Watch some goldfish make music.

Watch some goldfish make music.

Just two dudes fixing the antenna on the Empire State Building.

Just two dudes fixing the antenna on the Empire State Building.

Daleks have invaded Burning Man. Also this might be my first...

Daleks have invaded Burning Man. Also this might be my first Doctor Who related post on Tumblr. Probably more to come.
